Legal Technology Competency for Referral Service Attorneys: Managing Conflicts, Intake, and Fee Compliance on the Qase Platform

This training program is required for attorneys who wish to participate in the SJCBA Lawyer Referral Service Program.

    Learning objectives include:

Apply conflict-screening and timely-response obligations when handling new referrals: Recognize referral notifications, understand that "accepting" a referral only signals willingness to consult (not representation), and use the review/accept/decline workflow appropriately, including documenting decline reasons (e.g., conflict of interest) for the referring service.

Complete secure account setup and verification: Perform first-time login, email verification, and password creation in a way that protects client confidentiality and account security before handling referred client data.

Manage the lead intake pipeline through to disposition: Track a referral's status (Contact Pending, Contacted, Consult Scheduled, Under Review, Hold), document consultation notes, and correctly convert a lead into an open matter or close it out as "Not Hired," maintaining an accurate record of client contact.

Administer open matters in compliance with recordkeeping obligations: Update matter status, record fee agreements, and monitor matters that haven't been updated within required timeframes.

Calculate and remit lawyer referral service forwarding fees accurately: Determine cumulative client fees collected, compute the amount due under the applicable forwarding-fee percentage, and submit payment with proper billing-period documentation, consistent with rules governing referral fee-sharing and disclosure.

Identify support resources for technical issues: Locate the platform bookmark, whitelist the correct sender address, and know where to direct technical questions, ensuring continuity of client service.
